Doodle’s & Sketches – Anen’s Designs Defy Easy Categorisation By Nada Khalaf-Jones – Citizen of Earth

Welcome to the world of Iijima Naru – Discovered by this Florida Keys Photographer.

In a digital age of fleeting trends, the story of ANEN unfolds as a testament to authenticity and artistry. I had the privilege of meeting Iijima Naru, the visionary owner and creative director of ANEN. We spent time talking and engaged in an inspiring dialogue that transcended fashion.
Bridging Traditional Techniques With Modern Aesthetics Is The Magic
During our conversation, Naru shared insights into his brand’s philosophy. He highlighted sustainable practices and ethical craftsmanship that resonate with today’s conscious consumers.
Each piece of clothing tells a story, reflecting individual style and a commitment to local artisans. This dedication to quality sets ANEN apart in a crowded marketplace. His vision appeals to those seeking a deeper connection to a movement celebrating creativity and meaningful expression.
Naru’s passion for combining traditional techniques with modern aesthetics invites wearers to be part of a legacy. A legacy that honors both heritage and innovation.
Roots of Creativity: Iijima’s Early Inspirations
“Before I could even grasp the world around me, I found solace in drawing imaginary creatures and dragons,” Iijima recalls. A thoughtful and gentle smile reflecting in his words.
His childhood, marked by doodles and designs, evolved as he transitioned from sketching manga characters to conceptualising soccer gear during his elementary days.

Anen’s Genderless Designs Defy Easy Categorisation – Deep Love For Kimono Blends Fashion With Dragon Dreams – This Is Japan’s Best
Anen’s Designs Defy Easy Categorization – Kimono blended with western styles driven by a childhood of dreams about dragons and re-invented soccer uniforms, creating a unique tapestry that reflects both personal history and cultural influences.
The pivotal shift came during university, where city life introduced him to the allure of vintage clothing, leading him to explore diverse aesthetics that challenged conventional fashion norms. This transformative period ignited a passion for mixing textures and patterns, allowing him to experiment freely, leading to innovative creations that tell stories of their own while inviting wearers to express their individuality.
“I fell in love with aged wool and linen, their textures telling stories of time,” he says.
This passion led to the birth of ANEN around 2020, post his stint co-running a vintage shop.
Crafting Connections Through Fabric
ANEN isn’t just a brand; it’s an embodiment of Iijima’s life philosophy. “My designs aim to defy easy categorization,” he explains. His creative process, deeply personal, is influenced by his sense of identity and an insatiable curiosity. Collaborations hold a special place in his heart, particularly with artisans like the Kanazawa sisters, a lacquer artist and a textile weaver, whose crafts resonate with his aesthetic vision.
A Partnership Beyond Marriage
Integral to Iijima’s journey is his wife, a contemporary art stone sculptor. “She’s my confidante, critic, and the first to witness my creations,” he shares warmly. Beyond artistic synergy, she manages the financial facets of ANEN, enabling Iijima to immerse himself wholly in the creative flow.
A Dialogue with Nada Khalaf-Jones
Our conversation naturally intertwined with the reflective insights of Nada Khalaf-Jones, whose heartfelt correspondence with Iijima revealed the profound impact of ANEN beyond fashion. Nada’s stories of family, adoption, and personal growth resonated deeply, creating a rich tapestry of shared humanity.
“Your words help me understand myself better,” Iijima responded in one exchange, highlighting a connection that blurred the lines between interviewer and interviewee.
The Essence of ANEN
Anen’s Designs Defy Easy Categorisation – ANEN’s story is more than fabric and stitches; it’s about embracing life’s nuances, celebrating imperfections, and forging authentic connections. Whether through the texture of vintage linen or the warmth of heartfelt conversations, Iijima Naru’s work invites us to see beauty in the unspoken and the unseen.
ANEN – shopping isn’t really accurate. For me, it’s a journey in emotions.
Anen Official Instagram is my favorite way to spend an hour, literally drooling over the materials.
Not just that, the movement he keeps in his photographs, so beautifully.
I have a hard time not hitting buy. But, saving and waiting has paid off, after many weeks of research and inspired thoughts. Buying Anen’s clothing is a creative process for me – it is a long and treasured journey.
